Miriam Locher obtained her Lizentitat (1998) in English and history from the University of Zurich, and her PhD (2001) and habilitation (2005) from the University of Berne.

Miriam Locher obtained her Lizentitat (1998) in English and history from the University of Zurich, and her PhD (2001) and habilitation (2005) from the University of Berne.
She spent one year in Edinburgh (GB) as assistant teacher and one at Georgetown University (USA) as visiting researcher. Her work has been in the field of linguistic im/politeness and the exercise of power in oral communication (Power and Politeness in Action, Mouton de Gruyter, 2004; Impoliteness in Language, Mouton de Gruyter, 2008, co-edited with Derek Bousfield), advice-giving in an American Internet advice column (Advice Online, John Benjamins, 2006) and Standards and Norms of the English Language (2008, co-edited with Jürg Strässler). She is working in the English Department of the University of Basel, Switzerland.
