The VALS-ASLA 2026 Conference explores topics highlighting the power of language in legal issues, and more generally in situations of dissent and conflict implicating the negotiation of evidence and the re-establishment of consensus.
Forensic linguistics is a field of applied linguistics in which all the sub-disciplines of linguistics contribute to settle legal issues – from phonetics and the identification of (type of) speakers, to text linguistics and the spotting of fakes, copyright violations and plagiarism. Linguistics also intervenes in the legal field by proposing a large array of studies regarding different legal issues – from the way in which legal texts are written to the way in which talk organizes courtroom procedures.
Applying linguistics in these contexts enables a reflection on the way in which evidence and arguments are produced linguistically, discursively, interactively, as well as the way in which legal reasoning is based on linguistic evidence. The work of mediation uses both to negotiate forms of consensus across dissenting positions.
Die VALS-ASLA Konferenz 2026 behandelt Themen, die die Macht der Sprache in rechtlichen Fragestellungen beleuchten und allgemeiner in Situationen von Dissens und Konflikt, in denen es um die Aushandlung von Beweisen und die Wiederherstellung von Konsens geht.
Die forensische Linguistik ist ein Teilgebiet der angewandten Linguistik, in dem alle linguistischen Teildisziplinen zur Klärung rechtlicher Fragen beitragen – von der Phonetik und der Identifizierung von (Sprecher-)Typen bis hin zur Textlinguistik und der Aufdeckung von Fälschungen, Urheberrechtsverletzungen und Plagiaten. Die Linguistik wirkt auch im rechtlichen Bereich, indem sie eine Vielzahl von Studien zu unterschiedlichen juristischen Fragen bereitstellt – von der Abfassung juristischer Texte bis zur Organisation von Gerichtsverfahren durch Sprache.
Die angewandte Linguistik in diesen Kontexten ermöglicht eine Reflexion darüber, wie Beweise und Argumente linguistisch, diskursiv und interaktiv hervorgebracht werden, sowie darüber, inwiefern juristisches Argumentieren auf linguistischer Evidenz beruht. Die Mediationsarbeit greift auf beides zurück, um Formen von Konsens zwischen divergierenden Positionen auszuhandeln.
La conférence VALS-ASLA 2026 explore des thématiques mettant en lumière le pouvoir du langage dans les problématiques juridiques, et plus largement dans des situations de désaccord et de conflit impliquant la négociation des preuves et le rétablissement du consensus.
La linguistique forensique est un domaine de la linguistique appliquée dans lequel toutes les sous-disciplines des sciences du langage contribuent à résoudre des questions juridiques – de la phonétique pour l’identification des (types de) locuteurs à la linguistique textuelle pour la détection des faux, des violations du droit d’auteur et du plagiat. La linguistique intervient également dans le champ juridique en proposant un large éventail d’études portant sur différentes questions – de la rédaction des textes juridiques à l’organisation des procédures judiciaires par l’interaction verbale.
L’application de la linguistique dans ces contextes permet une réflexion sur les manières dont les preuves et les arguments sont produits linguistiquement, discursivement et interactionnellement, ainsi que sur la manière dont le raisonnement juridique repose sur des preuves linguistiques. Le travail de médiation mobilise ces deux dimensions afin de négocier des formes de consensus entre des positions divergentes.
La conferenza VALS-ASLA 2026 esplora tematiche che mettono in evidenza il potere del linguaggio nelle questioni giuridiche e, più generalmente, in situazioni di dissenso e conflitto che implicano la negoziazione delle prove e il ristabilimento del consenso.
La linguistica forense è un ambito della linguistica applicata in cui tutte le sottodiscipline delle scienze del linguaggio contribuiscono a risolvere questioni legali – dalla fonetica all’identificazione dei (tipi di) parlanti, dalla linguistica testuale all’individuazione di falsificazioni, violazioni del diritto d’autore e plagio. La linguistica interviene per altro nel campo giuridico proponendo un ampio ventaglio di studi su diverse questioni – dalla redazione dei testi giuridici al modo in cui il parlato organizza le procedure giudiziarie.
L’uso della linguistica in questi contesti consente una riflessione sui modi in cui prove e argomentazioni sono prodotte linguisticamente, discorsivamente e interattivamente, nonché sul modo in cui il ragionamento giuridico si fonda su prove linguistiche. Il lavoro di mediazione si avvale di entrambe per negoziare forme di consenso tra posizioni divergenti.
Call for Paper
Linguistic scholars are invited to present ongoing research on these topics, in the form of data presentations, analyses, and results—for presentations of 20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion. Please send a title and an abstract of 300 words (references excluded) to info@vals-asla.ch by April 20, 2026.
